Tension would remain high throughout Boston. Over the next decade plus the city’s working class neighborhoods were engulfed in a particularly vicious brand of racial turmoil: black children targeted by racist white mobs in school desegregation battles; white, working class Boston’s violent cry of, “Hell no we won’t go;” it all added up to a low point in the city’s history.

If white Boston or the police were going to use violence, St. Laurent was prepared. An FBI informant claimed St. Laurent was collecting guns, hand grenades, nitroglycerin and holding classes to make fire bombs. He brought Youth Security Patrol members to shooting ranges in the country. During a nightly patrol, where he and his team monitored Boston Police for brutality, N.E.G.R.O. drove around Roxbury heavily armed.
